Insanity - (2:35)

The theme of my project is “German Expressionism”. This theme was noticed by some viewers in most Tim Burton movies, like “Edward Scissorhands” or “Sleepy Hollow”. This was made in 1920s Germany, when WWI was over and most German movies were made with backdrops and creepy looking people and things, weird dark lighting and more (for example in Nosferatu). The themes for “German Expressionism” include anxiety and creepiness.

I made a project where I made my own video with “German Expressionism” where the main character was kidnapped by someone and later this person started to talk about insanity to the main character.

In this project, I used three different film techniques: Long Shot, Close-Up Shot and Panning shot. The first technique I’ll explain is “Long Shot”. There I wanted to describe the main character’s feelings. In the scene, the main character is walking outside and has a feeling he’s being followed. This would make the viewers feel anxious and be a little nervous about the scene.

The second technique is “Close-Up Shot”. In my project, I wanted to make the scene thrilling. For example, in a scene when a crazy person is introduced and he looks creepy and he appears suddenly. I used this filming technique to make the audience feel like they're in the scene and have some sort of claustrophobia. I always liked this technique because it can make viewers experience the feeling that they’re in the same place with the character/s.

The last and third technique is the “Arc Shot”. There I wanted to make one scene make people worried about what is going to happen and make them have chills and be interested. For example, when the crazy person was talking to the main character, the camera was moving around him and it would make viewers interested in what he was talking about and listen to him.

I used: Color aesthetics and camera angles. I always like the style of black and white in movies, and I had the same key element in my video. This would make the feeling that the scene is happening in an absolutely different place or world. When it all has normal colors, the main character is in the real world, and when it’s dark gray, it’s happening inside his head.
