Day to Day Routine - (1:53)

My goal for this project was to experience the “French New Waves” themes and use the inspiration of it so I could understand how it works. So, I used my themes and techniques and I was intending to learn how to use them in the theme of the project. For the movie theme of French New Wave, I love the loneliness theme because it can express a character’s feeling in the scene. I used this theme for my project as I wished to realize it in my video.

In the video, there’s one main character and some extras who are in the movie to show the audiences this theme.

My project is about the daily routine with a French New Wave theme, like Loneliness. I used techniques, like Jump Cut, Natural Lighting and Sound. I wanted to use these techniques because they are more interesting to look at. French New Wave is the way French directors in the 1950s were making their movies the way they wanted, without big studios’ narratives and because of that directors had very low budgets. This would make my project very creative since this subject is for creativity and people had to have their own ideas and imagination of making their movies because they didn’t have much budget.

The film techniques I wanted to explore are Jump Cuts, natural lighting and sounds. I wanted to explore these techniques because people mostly didn’t use any instruments for sounds or artificial light sources for light. They all were recording actual sounds of things and used natural lighting instead. I wanted to explore these techniques because of its realism of filming/recording them.

As a director, I had to take responsibility for everything: Filming, time management, setting and script. I always check on how the scene is made and filmed, and what the weather will be like.

One challenge I can think of is day time because when I was working on this project, the sun was setting earlier, mostly at 3:30-4PM, it was getting dark and I had to pick the right time to film the video. The second problem was creating a storyboard. The challenge for this is the narrative of the video. French New Wave movies don’t have a normal narrative like in normal movies. Another challenge was extra casting. For example, I wanted to film scenes with random people, and it was a bit hard with the weather as well since it was raining most of the time. Another challenge would be if people will look at the camera noticing me filming.

I didn’t have any sets for the project since “French New Wave” was made for a low budget, so I didn't build or buy anything. All I used are natural places, for example I was filming in my apartment, school, outside, bus stops and cafeteria (in school).

I ended up making the film techniques I planned to use, like jump cuts. I also had another film technique I didn’t plan. It was a close up shot where the camera was very close to the main character’s face and it worked perfectly for the project because my expressions seemed realistic and it would be noticeable how the main character is feeling.

I was filming most scenes with the main character’s facial expressions and I did it for the video because I needed it to be the most important part. For example, in the scene where the main character works on the computer in school, this scene was more focusing on him and nothing else like if he was the most important part.

I picked the “Loneliness and Repetition” theme because I wanted to try this theme for its idea of how it feels to be alone and express it through film. I was really satisfied with my theme because I got what I wanted and I didn’t make another horror story since I was already making a lot.

I was happy about editing because I wanted to speed-up the footage. The idea of editing when the main character is doing his routine and it jump-cuts to the next scene was inspired by Edgar Wright movies.

My conclusion about the final project as a whole was great because I’m glad that I got more free time for this project and I was glad that I didn’t have to look for the sound effects like I was always doing with film projects. I was also glad that I could film everything with real and natural sounds because this was new for me and it’s something I never experienced before. The French New Wave theme is good for starters who work on a movie for the first time and for people who have a small budget. So it’s better to use that theme for small projects that are not made for professionals.
